Recently I have been doing more 1-on-1 mentoring session for start up photographers and portrait photography enthusiasts. They came from different backgrounds, some are photographers just started up their photography business and want to know more of the business side, some of them are doing photography part time and want to take it to the next level, some of them are just photography enthusiasts but eventually want to do it more professionally.
Jennifer is one of my mentees since early 2012, she is a start up wedding and portrait photographer in the Bay Area, she wanted to be better both on the shooting side and also the business side. In her very first mentoring session in January this year, I looked at her portfolio, website and blog, and we setup some short term goals ( 6 months – 12 months) and things we wanted to archive to get more clients and be able to build better portfolio and faster. We had another on location outdoor portrait mentoring session back in April and she had learned a lot as well and took away a lot of my tricks with her. I’ve been following Chung’s work for awhile and took one of Chung’s small group workshops back in 2010. His knowledge with photography and attentiveness to the needs of his “students” and clients is what brought me back to him for a 1-1 mentoring session in early 2012. Before the session he asked me what the different areas are that I need help with so that he can create something more customized. For the session, we met up at his studio where he was able to help identify some goals to work towards for the year. Chung also provided valuable critique of the different things I already had in place and how they could be improved upon so that I can continue moving forward with my photography.
After the session I went home with my mind filled with all the tips and techniques that we discussed along with a long to-do list that I couldn’t wait to tackle. Not only is Chung a master of his craft, but he’s also a great teacher to photographers of all levels.
